Herbs Contraindicated
In Pregnancy
NOTE: A
PRUDENT PERSON DOES NOT
TAKE ANY UNNECCESARY SUBSTANCES
DURING PREGNANCY. IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, TRYING TO GET PREGNANT, ON
"THE PILL" FOR CONTRACEPTION, OR MAY BE PREGNANT, OR IF YOU ARE
LACTATING AND BREASTFEEDING, DO NOT TAKE
ANY DRUGS OR MEDICINALS, INCLUDING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS
AND HERBS, O.T.C.'s (over-the-counter medications), ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, or (
of course ) ILLEGAL STREET DRUGS WITHOUT
THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONSTANT SUPERVISION OF YOUR LICENSED HEALTHCARE PROVIDER.
A GOOD AND COMPETENT DOCTOR
WILL ONLY ALLOW YOU TO TAKE THOSE MEDICATIONS WHICH SUPPORT THE HEALTH AND LIFE OF
YOURSELF AND THAT OF YOUR UNBORN BABY.
According to Ferlow Brothers in
Canada,
"As a general
rule, NO herbs should be used during pregnancy, except under the direction of
a qualified Naturopath or Medical Herbalist. The only exception to this is
raspberry leaf. This can be used throughout the pregnancy."
Ferlow
Brothers in Canada are just one site on the web which posts which herbs to
avoid completely during pregancy, lactation, and/or childbirth.

HARPING ON HEALTH:
FOOD AS MEDICINE?
by Lori Anderson Bunge
Health Journalist
DO WE THOROUGHLY REALIZE JUST WHAT
OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN SPACE GO THROUGH FOR US?
THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN IN OUR
WONDERFUL SPACE PROGRAM FACE CONSTANT DANGER....
The space shuttle accidents have made us realize just how much danger they do
face. In the wake of those disasters, do truly patriotic Americans now
cut the funds in the space program?
The patriotic astronauts need our financial support now more than ever.
America has benefited greatly in
terms of scientific achievements due to those brave men and women. Yet,
did you ever stop t think that we have also gleaned tons of health knowledge
from them as well?
I do not have room in this column to discuss every single health discovery
that NASA has blessed us with. Lettuce now focus on just one....STAR
TREK FOOD!
What exactly is what I call STAR TREK
FOOD? It is food which has been processed, reduced, dehydrated,
purified, and sealed to withstand and remain stable during space flight and to
maintain the health and well-being of the crew whilst in flight.
When I look at a handful of dietary supplements, "eggs in
a squeeze tube," dehydrated apples, etc. I simply do
not see a
four-course meal. For someone like me who loves thanksgiving,
thanksgiving in space is a truly frightening thought. Encapsulated turkey and
"tabulated"
mash potatoes could make even the most stout person whimper like a
spoiled brat!
Do we REALLY understand what our wonderful space crews have endured for us;
besides extreme danger, anti-gravity, etc.
Irish Breakfast Fry extract, a cup of coffee, with the Seattle
Post-Intelligencer in space!
ALL I CAN SAY IS; SUPPORT THE SPACE PROGRAM!
AND..... SUPPORT THE "SPICE" PROGRAM, TOO!
WHAT IS THE "SPICE" PROGRAM (Egads.....no.... it has NOTHING
to do with "The Spice Girls!")
THE "SPICE PROGRAM" of Well Lore Virtual Abbey is a gracious and
broad-based program to teach the virtues of safe and healthy
herbs and spices
in healthy eating and for health maintainence. (And to remind NASA to make sure our space crews eat flavorful
suppers!!) You know....Euell Gibbons was right, you know!
(OK...OK...SILLY AND CORNY...SILLY AND CORNY...I KNOW!)
Yer these are healthy herbs and spices that have been consumed
throughout the ages for the benefit of good health maintenance and the
potential remedy of afflictions. And...Julia Child shall be proud of
thine efforts!
I hope NASA provides "THE SPACE PROGRAM" with "THE SPICE
PROGRAM" and I petition good Americans to vigorously support our space
crew and their inter-stellar health and well-being.
When NASA creates dietary supplements, or
"tube food", it is highly nutritious; (no "snake oil" for
NASA; none!) yet for me, if it is possible, I prefer my
regular scrambled eggs hot off the griddle with 12-grain bread. (I also
support NASA providing the Space Crews with high-tech cooking utensils)
When it comes to the honor of our country, and the safety of our crews, lettuce
not be cheapskates!
Sadly, our brave men and women of space do not
have all the comforts of home. I deeply admire their bravery and the
awesome contribution they have made to scientific research.
I also deeply respect that NASA crew for their bravery in eating from cartons, tubes, cans, etc. They
have contributed great amounts to scientific knowledge (and outdoor sports)
just with the "Star Trek"-type food! The
are most noble.
As a matter of fact, I do think I have seen "tubed breakfast
food"
in outdoor sports shops. (When you're truly tired,
any food that
is healthy and replenishing does and should taste
great!)
And...good things can come in pills! In my opinion, well-prepared
garlic pills come straight from heaven! Cranberry's not
too bad in softgel form, and celery seed whole herb supplement (though minus
the peanut butter) isn't too bad either!
Ever tried extra-virgin coconut oil on Lorna Doone shortbread
cookies? Wonderful!
JUST MAKE SURE THE HERBS YOU TAKE ARE TRULY BENEFICIAL
HERBS! AND ONES WHICH CANNOT HARM YOUR UNBORN CHILDREN.
My point is...why should those (who are not floating in space,
mind you) and who have normal food preparation time and the energy
even consider
eating strange, unidentified mushrooms, "foxglove tea" or any odd
herb? I don't even want to eat "gravy extract" or filet
mignon (yuck) in the carton when I could enjoy real food!
One should certainly not eat poisonous plants!
I don't want to pop cranberry softgels when I could pop a real
cranberry....(Although, I personally sometimes prefer the softgels
though I'm not going to make a pie with them or place a bowlful of
softgels on my Thanksgiving table.)
THIS POINT I AM MAKING IS THIS.....FIRST...IMPROVE YOUR
REGULAR DIET BY INCORPORATING HEALTHY FOODS, HERBS, AND SPICES INTO A
BALANCES, HEALTHY DIET. THEN....TAKE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE DIETARY
SUPPLEMENTS IN MODERATION USING DUE CARE AND YOUR BRAIN.
On the other hand.....( in heaven's name) why would anyone
even even consider taking "foxglove" or making
"foxglove pie" or
"belladonna" broth or "witches broom?" omlet?
Are those DANGEROUS HERBS really daily "dietary supplements?" Egads....sounds like
dinner in a horror movie to me!
I know it's just my opinion, but.........
I never want to hear of Foxglove Pie! Just like
there is no such thing as nitroglycerine tea! Save the nitroglycerine
for the
gentle use of licensed cardiologists!
Especially when one could take healthful
and benevolent "garlic?"
Does "garlic" sound too boring or mundane for you. WELL....
witches may be strange and exciting, but they are definitely
DANGEROUS TO ONE'S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
Again....I personally do not consider that which may be
a dangerous or poisonous plant to be a daily "dietary
supplement!"
I say opt for safe, thanksgiving "gravy extract"..........
before "witch's broom!" or "wormwood stew-extract!" or
"nitroglycerine tea!" Some teas are best made by licensed
pharmacists!
My point is this.....for the non-expert,
whenever possible, use "food supplements" and stay away from ALL unknown, exotic, and strange "herbs."
In fact, use due care and caution when taking ANY medication.
"STRANGE HERBS" COULD BE STRAIGHT FROM
THE HAG'S CAULDRON WITH LIBERAL AMOUNTS OF TOXIC AND ADULTERATING SUBSTANCES THROWN IN FOR "FLAVOR."
I know THIS POST IS OVERDONE but I want everyone of you to be
safe!
Protect the health of your family with healthy, nutritious
food
FIRST, then safe and pure "food herbs " or "food
supplements"
from reputable, trusted, and purity-conscious supplier and/or store.
When it comes to caring for your family, "walk like an
Eqyptian"...weren't they the ones that grew all the onions, garlic,
and leeks that the Jews were still craving in the desert?
What do I mean by "food herbs" or "food
supplements?"
Again, I am referring to those dietary supplements that are
related
to historical, commonly-consumed food-stuffs, like "garlic, onions,
celery," or maybe even "fenugreek" (which may have a
"maple" flavor and is reportedly used as a seasoning and to
enrich lifestock feed in some countries)
Pumpkin seeds, cranberries, and extra-virgin coconut oil all
have powerful healing properties. Sound too "un-exotic"
for
you? Well....ill-crafted and unknown herbs may be "exotic"...it
is also a BIG MISTAKE to play games with them, since such can lead to poor
health or extreme danger!
AMERICA HAS MORE PLANTS THAN YOU CAN COUNT!
Am I saying that someone who encourages people to take
"foxglove" plant is a "witch?" No.....but.......maybe they
do not know which is a safe herb and which is dangerous! Unless that person is a licensed medical doctor with prescribing authority who
is prescribing "digitalis" in the proper and safe dosage for your
heart condition, I say stay away from foxglove! I would not recommend people playing with
unknown plants or those that have not been properly manufactured, or are meant
for LIMITED usage by knowledgeable pracitioners, since the dangers of
plants like "foxglove", and the limits on its safe usage, are well-established.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON USING DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS SAFELY, GO
TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION'S WEBSITE AT http://www.fda.gov/
I cannot emphasize this enough for the lay person. Based
on
my journalistic research, stay away from all exotic, strange, or
ill-prepared herbs (and those that push them as "beneficial" to your
health)...they may not be. Why? Just because they are what I term "unknown herbs." They may be safe....they may be dangerous...
yet you do not know. So stay away from them!
If you are going to take supplements, take ones which
the
proper, trusted, ethical, and well-known authorities have reported as safe.
What I call "food supplements" (meaning those dietary
supplements which, on the most part, are comprised from
food stuffs as in the case of garlic, onions, celery, cran-
berry, grapefruit, etc.). And be sure to only take
supplements
from companies that have pure and safe standards for
manufacturing.
PURITANS PRIDE VITAMINS OFFERS MANY FOOD
SUPPLEMENTS
AS DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS..... click www.puritan.com
Don't forget about food intolerances and/or possible allergies and
consider them (with doctor supervision) BEFORE taking any supplements.
And remember...just because an herb or supplement is a
"food herb" or "food supplement" does not mean that you
can
take it carelessly or without due care and still use it safely
and beneficially. For example, taking the relatively safe
herbs of garlic and ginger with some blood-thinning drugs could
have consequences in the form of increased bleeding.
Even "food herbs" or "food supplements" need to be
properly
used and not misused or used without caution.
IF YOU HAVE AN ADVERSE REACTION TO EVEN A "FOOD
HERB" OR "FOOD SUPPLEMENT" or ANY DIETARY SUPPLEMENT,
IMMEDIATELY REPORT THIS TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES AND TO KNOWLEDGE BASES LIKE
OUR WELL-LORE ABBEY.
The faithful cooperation of respectable members of the community is what keeps
the usage of plant medicinals
safe and not dangerous for the Western world.
Even safer food supplements should not take the place of good
nutrition or the proper intake of fluids. It is important to first improve one's nutrition, then
possibly utilize supplements (which have been proven safe) under (if
necessary) the advice
and guidance of your doctor.
Only take a supplement if you have not been
able to correct
your health concern through proper diet and exercise, then
only take supplements which have been proven safe and
effective, under the care and supervision of your doctor, and
use only those that are if necessary.
Set health improvement goals (which keep in mind first and foremost vital organ health and function before moderate
concerns for one's appearance.) Then eat foods and moderately take food supplements
that support the improvement of bodily functions for the shortest
duration possible, at the lowest dose
that is still safe and effective, and
only for the duration of the health concern.
Some herbs are good to take regularly (like cranberry or
garlic)yet only at the proper and safe dosage. Remember, garlic can kill
good bacteria right along with bad bacteria; consider acidophilus
supplementation via active-culture yogurt or active-culture safe supplements
from a reputable manufacturer to replenish the "good bacteria" into
your digestive system that your body depends upon to digest its food.
Don't forget the amazing health benefits of healthy doses of
Vitamin C for general health and consumption of medicinal berries
from the blueberry, huckleberry, "billberry," strawberry,
raspberry, and of course blackberry families.
Once the heath concern has improved, gradually
decrease the
amount of specialty supplement used (like celery seed which is diuretic) with doctor
supervision; as your body's
health improves and your body "kicks in" with its own, unassisted
and improved function. And, under your doctor's supervision if
necessary, do not forget the importance of moderate amounts of exercise.
Eat GRAPES...they may contain healthy amounts of natural
potassium...and as Euell Gibbons tutored us ....eat your GRAPE NUTS!
Take the responsibility to talk with your doctor regarding your
questions and concerns regarding even food supplements
and if you go to a good doctor, your safety is assured.
Then, if it is medically necessary, and you have gotten the "OK"
from your doctor, enjoy the health benefits of flavorful
herbs and spices and other helpful dietary supplements such as
"food supplements".
For example, many reports I have read support
the use
of garlic for improving normal blood pressure regulation.
It has been reported that garlic contains numerous compounds
which improve heart health, including natural potassium
to balance out sodium and help regulate blood pressure.
Daily supplemention with supplemental potassium tablets, without the
proper guidance and education from a qualified doctor, can be potentially
dangerous. A supplement like potassium gluconate may be helpful in an
emergency when potassium levels have become dangerously low, but should
someone take potassium pills every day as a "daily supplement" if it has
not been
found necessary by their regular doctor?
IT IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED FACT THAT POTASSIUM
(ESPECIALLY IN POTASSIUM CHLORIDE IN INTRAVENOUS OR INJECTABLE FORM)MAY
BE VERY DANGEROUS AND TAKES EXTREME CAUTION AND DUE CARE
IN USAGE, AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS BY
GOOD AND COMPETENT MEDICAL PERSONNEL.
If you have a medical condition, I encourage you to talk with
you doctor BEFORE supplementing with potassium (again; some doctor's
state that the gluconate form of potassium is a little safer) so that
you may enjoy the benefits of proper potassium levels without the risks.
Consider the other option of garlic. GARLIC CONTAINS NATURAL
POTASSIUM, AS DO BANANAS AND GRAPES.
CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, AND POTASSIUM: A DELICATE BALANCE
For those who are very dependent on the intricate and delicate proper levels
of potassium (those with high blood pressure; heart patients; those with eye
disorders associated with circulatory problems) talk with your regular doctor
regarding your health concern and the potential benefits of potassium-rich
foods in your diet. Do not forget that potassium may be dependent on
magnesium; and consider the interaction between calcium and
magnesium. Dr. Mary Dan Eades, a foremost authority on vitamins and
minerals, recommends that individuals watch their calcium and magnesium
levels; additional potassium may not benefit if calcium and magnesium
are depleted. MAINTAIN PROPER CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM LEVELS so that the
proper amount of potassium can
can be of assistance and properly utilized by one's body.
One may need less of potassium if one maintains one's proper and balnce
calcium and magnesium levels.
Again, what may be a safer way to maintain healthful
and proper amounts of potassium in one's
diet is through the moderate consumption of potassium-rich foods, rather
than daily potassium supplements (unless their is an emergency and/or your
doctor orders it for health maintenance.)
The following is a condensed, partial list of
potassium-rich foods:
WHITE ONIONS
GREEN ONIONS
BANANAS
GARLIC
GRAPES
RAISINS
GRAPEFRUIT
PARSLEY
Our pet bunny loves dandelion greens. I have read reports that
they are rich in natural potassium and other vitamins and minerals, including
high amounts of natural vitamin C.
Potassium-rich garlic may have a blood-thinning,
arterial-cleaning effect that may help to reduce the possibility of fatal or
non-fatal heart attack from blood-clots causing arterial blockage and
oxygen-depletion of the heart. Remember; you heart PUMPS BLOOD AND
OXYGEN but it also NEEDS BLOOD AND OXYGEN! Blood clots are very
dangerous and can be proactively prevented! With the statistics related to heart disease as
they currently are, no wonder so many people have wisely cultivated and
activated the use of
garlic in their cooking and health regimes.
Numerous reports I have read, including those
from well-respected herbal authorities such as Dr. James Duke and Dr. Michael Murray, ND have wrote
very encouraging pieces on the heart-helpfulness of these two wonder food
herbs; garlic and celery seed.
It seems that moderate and proper amounts of potassium-rich garlic and onions,
which may be mated with the naturally diuretic qualities of
moderate amounts of celery, (and when used properly and for short periods) may have the effect of naturally
lowering blood pressure in some individuals.
One word of caution. If one uses celery seed to help
lower blood pressure; use it moderately and follow the directions and
the
advice of your doctor most closely. I do not recommend over-using it
simply as a diuretic to lose weight, etc. Diuretics can strip more than
water from your system; they can deplete you of essential potassium.
Read the following short explanations by clicking the following links:
http://www.viable-herbal.com/herbdesc1/1celerys.htm
Some natural health providers believe that celery seed
may
help to assist the resolution of any of a number of bodily
disorders; from high-blood pressure, arthritis, urinary-tract infections,
infammations, gout, liver damages, cancer and
tumors, and other age-related problems

IMPORTANT NOTE: VITAMINS, MINERALS, AND ELECTROLYTES NEED TO BE
REPLENISHED AT THE VERY FIRST SIGN OF POTENTIAL DEHYDRATION
AND/OR HARMFUL DEPLETION!
This takes a lot of forethought! Every one of us gets busy and
it is a challenge to think proactively; yet on this subject, it is
imperative! Especially when caring for babies, the very young
child, the elderly or infirm; it is truly frightful how quickly their
health can deteriorate from dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting; think ahead
for a quick defense and antidote. Vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and
fluids need to be replenished whilst the person
can hold things on their stomach. For older persons who are stronger,
ginger is reported to have a powerful anti-nausea effect whilst killing
harmful bacteria. For babies, very young children, and the elderly; if
possible, a quick jaunt to the minor emergency, hospital emergency, or
available doctor's office might be a prudent precaution.
Do not neglect trying to administer fluids whilst on the way, if the person
can take them. Intravenous fluids, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes
are available in the hospital, as are sub-lingual B-vitamins, medication
suppositories, anti-nausea/vomiting suppositories, etc. Talk with
the doctor BEFORE the person is in a critical condition.
Remember these key words; EDUCATION, PRO-ACTION and PREVENTION
for family health maintenance.
Remember, if you have dangerously-high
blood pressure, or
a heart or other serious condition, talk with your doctor first. Do NOT try to self-diagnose or self-treat yourself! (see Well Lore's Safety Information
and Legal Disclaimer herein by clicking here)
I encourage you to cook up a casserole full of powerful
health benefits today! Welcome the gradual discipline of good nutrition and moderate exercise to
your weekly regime. And when you're ready and prepared, throw in a clove of garlic for good balance
and measure!
I know I may be harping on the subject, though
really....
returning back to good health can be quite heavenly!
I wish you good and well.
Until we gather again.................

Mrs. Lori Anderson Bunge

Helpful Harping on Good Health............
HEAVENLY HEALTH.....NATURALLY
by Mrs. Lori Anderson Bunge
Health Journalism
Good doctors have long understood the many
health benefits
to be found in nature. In addition to the obvious benefit of a
deep breath of fresh, clean air, there are many natural sub-
stances that can be found in nature with "heavenly healing
abilities."
Michael T. Murray, N.D. is known as as one of the world's leading
experts on natural medicine.
According to one web site dedicated to him, "he serves on the Board of Trustees of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington and is is the co-author of A Textbook of Natural Medicine a textbook on naturopathic medicine for doctors, as well as a version of the book for consumers entitled the Encyclopedia
of Natural Medicine.
Dr. Murray has written over 20 other books including How to
Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine; The Pill Book
Guide to Natural Medicine; Dr. Murray's Total
Body Tune-Up;
5-HTP: The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity, and
Insomnia; The Healing Power of Herbs; and the Encyclopedia of
Nutritional Supplements.
Dr. Murray has been instrumental in bringing many
effective natural products to North America, including:
Glucosamine sulfate
St. John's wort extract
Ginkgo biloba extract
Silymarin
Enteric coated peppermint oil
Saw palmetto berry extract
The doctor has been compiling a database of
original scientific
studies from medical literature. He has over 50,000 articles from the
scientific literature which show strong evidence on the
helpfulness
of diet, vitamins and minerals, glandular extracts, herbs, and
other of disease. "
According to Dr. Murray:
"One of the great myths about natural
medicines is that they are
not scientific. The fact of the matter is that for most common
illnesses there is greater support in the medical literature for a
natural approach than there is for drugs or surgery."
It is sad that many people do not realize that
nature can provide
them with good health.
"Michael T. Murray, N.D. has dedicated his life
to educating
physicians, patients, and the general public on the tremendous
healing power of nature."
Dr. Murray's books have cumulative sales of
over two million copies, According to the web site regarding the doctor, he
has virtually written thousands of articles, appeared on hundreds of radio and TV programs, and lectured to hundreds of thousands of people nationwide.
