"HISTORICAL HERBS, NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS AND IMMUNITY DEFENSE"

Mrs. Lori Anderson Bunge
Healthcare Journalism

What can one do about  "foreign invaders....foreign invaders sometimes called "germs?"  What exactly are these "germs" and how do they pose a significant threat to the health of all? Remember...fatalistic thinking is what the enemy counts on.
How can good Americans fight back against these terrible alien entities that seem harmless enough at first, until they raise havoc on  health?

Sometimes we accidentally invite the alien foreign bodies in to our systems by neglecting good sanitation OR not protecting the
boarders of good health.

Other times, the aliens infiltrate through more EVIL and DECEPTIVE  means. We all watched the news as the so-called "Mrs. Anthrax" was captured this past year in Iraq;  it was reported she was allegedly responsible for over-seeing some of Iraq's biological weapon's programs.

Unfortunately, they did not have the opportunity to interview the "sons of Saddam" for their opinion about Mrs. Anthrax or natural health, since it was reported in the news that they sadly may have perished  with untreatable opportunistic infections inside a tent somewhere in the Middle East.

What  "psychic and physical" preparation  we can glean  from the ancient wisdom of the Greeks and Romans.

How was illness handled in the  ancient classical world?

Sometimes, illness was due to "intentional" causes, thereby it was simply referred to as "witchcraft." Again, we  all watched the news as the so-called "Mrs. Anthrax" was captured this past year in Iraq;  it was reported she was allegedly responsible for over-seeing some of Iraq's biological weapon's programs.

There are truly evil things people do with natural and biological substances, it is not their  clear intent to "nurture" or assist in health enhancement.  They simply intend to  cause the illness and death of innocent people;  which is a big mistake.

In the ancient world, the "sons or  daughters of terrorists"' who intentionally spread illness, disease, and death were dealt with most severely. For life could be very hard then, and much was at stake.

The Greeks and the Romans researched various ways, both chemical , biological, psychological, medical, whilst  utilizing various hardware  and scientific architectures, in order to "give a dose of one's own medicine." to evil people.  The good people amongst the ancients  were known for their creativity and philosophy, and also amazing nurturing abilities.  Yet ancient philosophy and moralistic teachings did tend to emphasize prudence, caution, and the utilization of good judgement when making moral and/or practical choices.

Yet there were still those who practiced little judgement.

For granted, if a natural health product claims "to be the cure for anthrax" or "can save you from bio-terrorism," one should view such claims with a healthy dose of prudence, precaution, and due care.  Such claims for a singular herbal remedy or supplement, or even a prescription medication so often advertised on television these days,  may be just motivated by some greedy person  trying to sell something without regard for the true health benefit  or what's really at stake,  Therefore, such wild health claims may be  completely bogus. Yet to label any and all natural health remedies
which classically (with historical, traditional,  and time-tested usage) have helped to prevent opportunistic infection or assist in recovery...to label such helpful natural substances as "bogus"  in lieu of the recent terrorist attacks against American citizens may be irresponsible. To undermine American citizen's health by spreading paranoia about safe natural remedies that have been time-tested since ancient classical times is unconscionable.

For example, garlic, cranberry, grapefruit, and ginger are foods;  they are not villains;  the terrorist is.

Yet prudence dictates that one should stay away from strange, exotic, unknown, or uncommon herbs and marketed remedies.\

Err on the side of caution.

Granted, it is difficult to analyze any singular health claim based on just an advertisement, you must remember that even prescription medication have caused many side effects, adverse reactions, injuries, and even deaths. The same holds true for herbal medicines.

Fortunately, some researchers have found that the  record of injurious adverse reactions or deaths from natural remedies is substantially less.

Still, remember the wisdom of caution.

There are time-tested and  clinical research studies verifying the probable health benefits of some natural substances.  Plant medicinals  can be of  great comfort and help  to those who are constantly struggling with their  health, and can be supplemental assistance to the care and supervision of your doctor.  Some commonly known and widely utilized herbs, spices, vitamins, and minerals have very safe and powerful healing properties.

According to Phyllis A. Balch, CNC, "It's amazing how far we have come in natural healing, without serious side effects.  Herbal treatments are capable of healing all kinds of disorders and all parts of the body....even in North America, many doctors now blend the best of conventional medicine with alternative healing and have found powerful new treatments that work."

In her best-selling book PRESCRIPTION FOR HERBAL HEALING, she states "Another reason for the revitalization of herbal medicine has come about in that while modern drugs has achieved a great deal in disease treatment, they also have contributed to ill health.  Every modern drug comes with warnings of side effects.  A standard textbook for pharmacists even states, "If a drug is stated to have no side effects, then it is strongly suspected it has no central benefit."

This holds true for over-the-counter medicines such as cold remedies, nasal sprays, etc.

Phyllis Balch continues:

"By one estimate, over 400,000 persons annually in the United States alone die of predictable side effects of prescribed drugs, taken in the hope that their potential benefit out-weights their known risks.  Thousands of others die due to predictable side effects of prescribed drugs, most frequently from  combinations of approved drugs rushed to market for a new application.  The Institute of Medicine (IOM), part of the National Academy of Sciences, estimates that preventable medication errors result in more than 7,000 deaths each year in hospitals alone.  According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, medical errors are the eighth leading cause of death among Americans."

Note:  One must remember that people die from common and dangerous  diseases also!

Phyllis Balch continues:

"Some herbal medicines can have side effects, but these effects are rare and seldom severe.  Generally, taking an over-the-counter, non-prescribed herb at random will result in no more serious complication than a stomachache.  Although deaths from side effects of herbs are not unknown, even the most ardent critics of herbal medicine estimate their number at fewer than twenty-five per year.  That's extremely low compared to prescription drugs."

Is Phyllis Balch trying to scare people away from taking their prescribed medications?  Probably not.  What I do believe she may be saying is herbal medicines have a  good safety record.

I believe that it is important to note here, and I do believe it is quite possible that Phyllis would agree with me, that not every
herb that is marketed as a "medicine" is really an "herbal medicine."
Just like with anything sold, there are good and bad products.
Some uncommon, rarely used, and unhistorical plants should not be marketed as "medicinal" at all, since they are of very limited use and are very dangerous if improperly used (i.e. Foxglove).  Then there are some herbs that can be dangerous if misused, but do have a narrow, limited, and beneficial medicinal application when used properly, in very tiny amounts, with few and very small doses, administered correctly, and  by someone well-schooled in proper handling and usage (Alcohol, Juniper, Aloe, and Licorice may be found to be examples of these.)  Yet because these particular herbs are substantially limited to very narrow and controlled usage by herbal experts, I would fall short of calling them "daily dietary supplements."

In the ancient classical, world, the practice of the "art" of Natural Medicine was usually limited to hereditary doctors reared in the  laws, ordinances, statutes, and traditions of their art.  These doctors followed the ceremonial laws regarding cleanliness, and practiced ceremonial "cleansings."  They had a basic understanding about the cause and treatment of diseases, sanitation, and the application of herbal medicine and nutrition.  Even today, one can find sound health guidance in ancient historical books like the Bible, with information regarding cleanliness, what to do about illness-causing fungi, bacteria, mold, and parasites, along with  precautions concerning the consumption of meat in the hot climate of the Middle East, etc. There is practical health and healing advice found in the Bible. The Jews oftentimes referred to this as "kosher" living, and sell "kosher" hotdogs and all types of "kosher" foods  even today!

Balch states that the all the herbs and formulas listed in her book PRESCRIPTION FOR HERBAL HEALING are used in modern medical practice in Europe, Egypt, Israel, or Japan.

Germany's Commission E regularly analyzes the scientific evidence and health claims related to herbs and compiles lists based on scientific evidence regarding safety and efficacy.

Phyllis Balch writes:  "The healing art of herbalism grew from hundreds of millions of personal healing experiences over centuries before the advent of scientific technology.  Herbal remedies that resulted in cures were recognized, remembered, and gradually categorized by the great schools of herbal healing.  They were recorded by Eqyptian medicine, Indian ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, and Japanese kampo;  the teachings of Hippocrates, Dioscorides,  Hildegard von Bingen, and Paraclesus..."

I have studied plant botany my whole life, with a love for nature and was raised in the agricultural, gardening, herbal studies, folk lore,  and natural health disciplines of my grandparents, and great- grandparents. I have studied herbs, spices, and dietary supplements  for over 24 years, have worked as a  biological technician, worked with the USDA and the US Forest Service,  I have identified  wild botanicals, and worked with botanical classification files. I have also worked in Plant Materials and seed harvesting. We have a great agricultural heritage here in the United States. As time passes, the more convinced I am of the virtues of the safe practice of the  art of natural health.

There there is no reason to be scared of SOME plant materials.

Yet I believe one should use due care, precaution, and prudence when examining the health claims of natural health products and herbal medicine.  One must fairly consider the moral character of the "natural healer" when considering their healing strategies.

Additionally, one should also  take care to be cautious about the those who spread imprudent and paranoid fear about natural medicine on the whole.  To totally discount holistic medicine is irrational.  Those who do so may too have a profit motive;
Remember, after the recent terrorist attacks, our government discovered seditious American citizens who were "spying for Russia" and/or channeling money and support to terrorist groups.  Please keep in mind foreign and domestic terrorists really do not want good Americans to be able to defend themselves against biological warfare or blatant witchcraft;  it goes without saying that most terrorists  certainly do not want their political enemies to be happy and healthy.  Therefore, one must use great wisdom when considering health claims, and  one must not be work shy when it comes to personal research.

I advocate the vigorous research of  natural medicine.  It is an intellectually stimulating subject.  I am a Christian and love my people. I encourage you not to be made  naive or paranoid by  rabble-rousers, or let people unduly distress or  alarm you about natural health, for

"A naive man believes anything"  ........Proverbs

This will only rob you of a great and mighty blessing.

For there are many time-tested and even clinical research studies verifying the probable health benefits of  natural substances for those who would benefit from them.  This can give great comfort to those who are constantly struggling with  poor health.

Now back to the ancient classical world;  there were  Greek and Roman soldiers, especially if they came from doctoral families, who were given  a basic understanding of natural medicine; and a "natural medicine kit" kept with the soldier's "supper kit" or "sup kit" used  to season food and treat illness.  Maybe these were  our first military medics!

"Kit Sup"  medicine was basic knowledge amongst some Greeks and Romans; it was considered almost as important as their double-edged sword in the protection of life and limb.  For nothing could cause the loss of limb (and eventually life) faster than an opportunistic wound infection.

(For those in our modern world who evolve  positive prudence   into gross skepticism and hysterical condemnation,  one is tempted to ask the question:  if YOU had a life-threatening, bacteria-ridden  neck wound, and there was such an emergency that much time would pass before rescue could arrive, would YOU want people to do nothing?)

Of course, ancient medicine was much different than Modern Western Medicine.  Yet there is very little doubt amongst medical historians that some of the "remedies of the ancients" did indeed help to destroy bacteria, prevent opportunistic infections, season and preserve food, and aid in wound healing.

Reports have stated that even past and current royal sovereigns have been interested in natural medicine.  A number of reports have stated that the current  Queen Elizabeth II is said to be supportive of natural health, and may have inquired about  naturopathic physicians.   Elizabeth I (Elizabeth Tudor) held a good understanding of gardening and herbals, and the safe and proper use of natural medicine.

Herbal medicine has a long and fascinating history in the British Isles.

Now back to the Mediterranean:  Italy and Greece, at various times, virtually lived in a state of siege during certain eras of the ancient world.  There were attacks from barbarians to the north.  There were especially vicious and terrible attacks from the Arab nations to the East (the poor Greeks!).  Unfortunately, Arab wars are nothing new;  America was not fighting a new battle during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  It is also not the first time a people (like the Iraqis) wished to be liberated from their own people (the Iraqis!)

Anyway...everything from well and aqueduct poisonings to wide-spread diseases...Bedouin mischief and sabotage created much havoc, chaos, and sorrow....the Greeks and Romans encountered everything.  Thus, they needed to be ready.  They needed their "KITSUPS!"  We may have gleaned our word "catsup" as a derivation from the medicinal seasoning kits the Greeks and Romans carried at all times ("KITSUPS")

(maybe they used seasoned tomatoes  it on their ancient French Fries!)

We all know how the Italians can be with tomatoes!

Anyway....here are some simple suggestions which any family can do in order to buffet their immune systems, enhance their health and well-being, and prevent opportunistic infections

The information in this article refers to the case of a NATIONAL EMERGENCY when resources may be limited.  Of course, in the case of serious illness in a NATIONAL EMERGENCY, and if it is possible, it is always ideal to obtain a prescribed antibiotic (yet only if necessary)  from a licensed physician who can directly oversee your emergency medical care.

IMMUNE SYSTEM ENHANCEMENT:
by Mrs. Lori Anderson Bunge, BA

____1.  SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

____2.  BE IN REGULAR CONTACT WITH YOUR FAMILY PHYSICIAN.  ASK HIM OR HER WHAT STEPS YOU MIGHT TAKE TO PREP YOUR FAMILY.  ASK ABOUT AN EXTRA EMERGENCY SUPPLY  OF VITAL PRESCRIPTIONS WHICH YOU CAN ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO WRITE FOR YOU TO HAVE IN CASE OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY.

DO THIS NOW!

("Procrastination leads to unexpected disaster..."  -PROVERBS)

THINK ABOUT THE BASIC THINGS YOU WOULD NEED TO MANAGE YOUR FAMILY MEMBER'S CHRONIC OR ACUTE HEALTH CONDITIONS FOR WHICH YOU ARE UNDER A DOCTOR'S CARE FOR ...ASK YOUR DOCTOR REGARDING THIS AND GATHER THOSE EMERGENCY PRESCRIPTION SUPPLIES, MEDICAL DEVICES, INSULIN, ETC.  NOW!

____3.  UPDATE NECESSARY IMMUNIZATIONS FOR FAMILY    MEMBERS

____4.  HAVE VISION AND HEARING TESTING DONE

____5.  CONTACT THE ELDERLY MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY AND EMPHASIZE THE NECESSITY OF PRUDENCE AND CAUTION ON THEIR PARTS.  WORK WITH THEM AND DEVISE AN EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN CASE THEY CANNOT CARE FOR THEMSELVES OR IF THERE IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY.  MAKE PLANS FOR SAFELY TRANSPORTING THEM TO CARE FACILITIES IN ORDER TO NURTURE AND GUARD THEM. ENCOURAGE THEM TO COOPERATE, BUT LET THEM MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES IF THEY ARE ABLE TO.   DO THIS BEFORE THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY HAPPENS.  (THE SAME APPLIES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN IN SCHOOL, ETC.)

____6.  HAVE AT LEAST SOME "NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS" ON HAND IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.  EDUCATE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS REGARDING THE SAFE USE THEREOF. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THOUGH, THAT SO-CALLED "NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS" SHOULD NEVER REPLACE OR NEGATIVELY INTERACT WITH THE PHARMACEUTICAL ANTIBIOTICS WHICH YOUR DOCTOR MAY PRESCRIBE AND FOR WHICH YOU ARE UNDER A DOCTOR'S CARE FOR.  NEVER STOP OR CHANGE, OR ADD TO  YOUR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION REGIME WITHOUT THE SUPERVISION OF YOUR DOCTOR.  ASK YOUR DOCTOR NOW ABOUT MEDICATIONS BEFORE AN EMERGENCY.

MAKE THIS PREPARATION YOUR CARDINAL RULE AND CANON LAW (even if you are a non-Catholic!  :)

WHEN CONSIDERING SPICE USAGE, REMEMBER THE WISDOM OF ST PATRICK...."JUST A PINCH."

DO THIS RELIGIOUSLY, WITH THE BLESSINGS OF CHRIST!

YOU WILL PROBABLY RECOGNIZE SOME OF THESE "NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS."  SOME OF THEM YOU MAY NOT RECOGNIZE.  IN ANY CASE, READ UP ON THEIR USE AND GATHER SOME FOR YOUR FAMILY NOW!  YET CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THE USE OF ANY PRESCRIBED OR NON-PRESCRIBED MEDICATION.

ROAM AROUND YOUR GROCERY AND NATURAL HEALTH STORE AND GATHER SOME OF THESE HERBS AND SPICES.  CHECK YOUR GARDEN (OR YOUR GOOD FRIEND'S GARDEN, WITH PERMISSION, OF COURSE!)

A very informative book that I recommend you read is HERBAL ANTIBIOTICS; Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-Resistant Bacteria, by Stephen Buhner.  Mr. Buhner explains that in the late 50's and early 60's, Stephen's great uncle, Leroy Burney, was the Surgeon General for the United States, and his Grandfather David Cox, was the president of the Kentucky Medical Association.  Buhner describes that these relatives of his "joined many other physicians in the industrialized nations  in declaring that the antibiotic era has come (penicillin, etc) jointly proclaiming the end for all time of epidemic disease."   It was indeed a noble desire.

Yet Buhner further explains in his excellent book that, unfortunately, notwithstanding the great  strides doctors made it fighting small-pox, warfare-related infections, etc., a new danger lurked under the microscope; the very real threat of DRUG-RESISTANT BACTERIA. (I will be constructing a whole article on this very subject; until then, do your research on the web and consult Stephen's excellent work HERBAL ANTIBIOTICS.... )

Unlike prescription antibiotics, herbal antibiotics do not have the same problems as some prescription antibiotics have with drug-resistant bacteria.  The basic definition of drug-resistant bacteria is that for a wide host of reasons, certain bacteria can mutate and/or become "drug-resistant" to the very prescription anti-biotic  drugs we rely on to kill the bacteria which makes us ill.  This is largely due to the over-use of prescription antibiotics  in America and the developed countries.   Buhner explains this in detail, but  Mr. Buhner further explains "Many herbs have historically been used to treat those infections caused by bacteria that are now antibiotic resistant.  Medical research outside of the United States  has been exploring plants that can treat antibiotic resistant disease."

Does this mean that we should not take Cipro if we get hit with an anthrax attack?  Certainly I would never encourage not taking a potentially life-saving medication.  I don't know about you, but I plan to take Bayer Corporation's CIPRO if  I ever really needed it.  What Mr. Buhner is emphasizing (an I whole-heartedly concur) is that it is vitally important that antibiotic drugs are not over-used (or under-used for that matter).  Prudence is in order here.  Mr. Buhner here gives us the following guidelines from his good book:

STEPS TO SLOW DOWN THE EMERGENCE OF ANTI-BIOTIC RESISTANT BACTERIA

1.  TAKE ANTIBIOTICS ONLY WHEN YOU REALLY NEED THEM.

2.  TAKE THEM ONLY ACCORDING TO PRESCRIPTION AND FOR AS LONG AS THE PRESCRIPTION INDICATES EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT FEEL BETTER THEN.  AT THIS POINT MOST OF THE PATHOGENIC BACTERIA HAVE BEEN KILLED (THAT IS WHY YOU ARE FELLING BETTER) BUT THERE ARE STILL SMALL NUMBERS OF THEM THAT CAN REPRODUCE AGAIN INTO THE BILLIONS IF YOU STOP THE ANTIBIOTICS.  THESE GROWING BACTERIA, BECAUSE THERE ANCESTORS WERE EXPOSED TO THE ANTIBIOTICS YOU ARE TAKING, ARE ALREADY LEARNING HOW TO BECOME RESISTANT.

3.  MAINTAIN A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM SO THAT YOU DO NOT GET SICK EASILY.

4.  EAT ORGANIC FOODS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN EXPOSED TO ANTIBIOTICS.

5.  USE HERBS AS ANTIBIOTIC ALTERNATIVES;  THEY DO NOT CAUSE RESISTANCE IN BACTERIA.

--with much appreciation the above list was excerpted for fair, non-commercial,  and educational use only  from Stephen Buhner's excellent work "NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS" A Medicinal Herb Guide  available through Storey Books
